October marked the kick-off of the Acquired Brain Injury study in which we will demonstrate the effect of HANDLE programs on the structure and function of the brain in adult survivors of brain injury. Our first client for this study recently underwent the initial HANDLE assessment and SPECT scans. The SPECT scan is a sensitive diagnostic tool capable of providing information about

blood flow to tissue to analyze how well an organ is functioning. David Lewis, MD, of Harborview Medical Center, will be employing this tool to provide scientific evidence on how healing occurs in the brain of the client as he/she progresses through the individualized HANDLE program. In the two months since the events of September 11th, generosity and the spirit of giving have illuminated the shadow of darkness cast by this senseless tragedy.  The outpouring of money to the victims of this attack has been both moving and inspiring.  Around the world, individuals and organizations have reached deeply into their hearts and pocketbooks, confirming that times of challenge have a way of invigorating the sum and substance of humanity.
As with many organizations that rely on charitable donations, The HANDLE Institute is also facing a time of challenge.  Much of the support we were anticipating from our annual fundraising event, and from ongoing contributions, has not materialized - as fear has tempered action and as funds have been diverted to the residents of New York and Washington DC.  Though it is important to help those

affected by this catastrophe, it is also imperative to remember that The HANDLE Institute is also providing a valuable service to those in need - to those struggling with neurological deficits.  With this thought, we are making an impassioned plea for your monetary contribution.
Our immediate financial challenges are clear.  As we strive to bring HANDLE theory and practice to families and agencies across the country and around the world, we delicately manage the balance between growth potential and resources.  The availability of financial resources will dictate whether or not we can ably meet increasing demands for services from clients, and for training from the professionals dedicated to helping them.  Our ability to provide scholarships to those in need is fundamental to the purpose of The HANDLE Institute, and your donations can help us to continue this effort.  Fi
