Important considerations in Individualized Education Programs
(From previous page)

Building unconditional compliance with requests into an IEP can create serious problems for children whose ability to generalize learning is weak or whose desire for social acceptance may lead them to comply in unconscionable situations. Frequently IEP goals are phased in ways that imply the child is defiant if he says "No" or "Not now" to a request to perform.
On the one hand we are working to teach our children to say no to drugs, to stand firm on the knowledge that their body is their own, and yet in many IEPs we expect compliance with procedures that may feel assaultive to the child.
The special needs child frequently has weakened self-esteem and difficulty under

standing how to be flexible and cautious in applying generalizations from one situation to another. Yet the special needs child desires to achieve academically, and socially. We need to help our special needs children learn when and how to stand firm on requests to perform behaviors that they feel violate their sense of self or their physical being. I am certain that every parent can imagine numerous situations in which they do not want their child to respond with unconditional compliance.
An IEP by design is much more than an outline of a child's special education program. It is a significant opportunity for parents of a special needs child to leverage the knowledge and expertise of a diverse team of

Parents, as experts  on the unique needs of their child, are the most important participants in the IEP planning process.

HANDLE welcomes new board members
and seeks new board members to join us in our mission

The Board of Directors of The HANDLE Institute is delighted to welcome it's two newest members.
Sandra Perry jumped in with both feet and became the Board secretary. Her interest in the work of The HANDLE Institute was sparked after attending a professional networking session sponsored by the Brain Injury Association of Washington. Sandra also recently began work as a counselor at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Seattle, heading

an innovative program for homeless women veterans.
Eltrina Simuel is already fully involved as new chair of the fund raising committee. As a successful fundraiser for other organizations, she offered to help move us to a financial level that would support our work in the world community. Professionally, Eltrina is retired from the Washington Employment Services Department and consults now with a nearby agency, Office Careers. Prior to joining the

board, she was instrumental in introducing us to a volunteer who provided office services for a period of three months.
Our thanks to Eltrina and Sandra for their contributions of time and energy to join the Board in its efforts to help The HANDLE Institute actualize its mission!
If you are interested in joining our Board or one of its committees, contact Roberta Sherwood at the Institute.

Welcome new
board members,
Sandra Perry and
Eltrina Simuel
