- OBJECT:
- To increase proprioception (the brains unconscious awareness of the sense of body in space), to enhance body schema, and to reduce stress on the vestibular functions through its interactive relationship with proprioception. Also to increase the stimulation to either the right or left cerebral hemispheres (commonly referred to as right brain or left brain) in the event of neglect, stroke, or closed head injury.
- MATERIALS:
- Weighted cuffs (1 pound each is generally appropriate for pediatric use; 2 pounds each for adults who present with no concern for joint problems).
- PROCEDURE:
- Place the cuffs on wrists and/or ankles. They will automatically call attention continually to the area weighted. In the case of neglect of one body side (as after a stroke) or reduced proprioception on one side, the weights should be on the neglected side only. In situations of bilateral or total proprioceptive deficits, the weights should be on both sides, although sporadically one side or the other should receive greater weighting, to heighten the attention by the use of novel, disharmonious input. The weights should be worn while relaxing, with limbs supported by the floor, table, etc. and should be removed after ten to fifteen minutes of use.
- VARIATIONS:
- Weighted vests and isometric bodysuits can be used for individuals who have a general sense that they are not grounded, that they are floating in space, or have no sense of their personal boundaries.
