Introductory Course: Get a HANDLE on Neurodevelopmental Differences

Overview
This 12-hour introductory course teaches the foundations of HANDLE, giving participants a beginning uderstanding neurodevelopment. Participants learn to look beyond labels to discover the neurodevelopmental irregularities that underlie the functional, behavioral, and learning challenges that many people face.
In this course students learn to:
- Begin to view neurodevelopment from a model of interactive and interdependent functioning, which enables a nonjudgmental approach to individual differences
- Understand how one’s neurodevelopment facilitates or impairs learning and interpersonal behaviors
- Learn methods with which to identify Neurodevelopmental systems that require therapeutic intervention recognize factors involved in processing sensory input in order for a response to occur
- Recognize subtle signs of stress, in order to consider environmental and lifestyle changes to reduce stress now and to individualize and alter task demand
- Become familiar with some HANDLE activities that may be used with groups or one-on-one to enhance neurodevelopment at any age
- See yourself and others through “new eyes”
- Be eligible to apply for the HANDLE Screening Course
Credits & CEUs
In the United States, University Credits are available through Antioch University, and in some states, Clock Hours/CEUs for teachers are also available. All students receive a Certificate of Attendance and Statement of Goals and Objectives which may assist them in obtaining CEUs in other professions and locations.

Introductory Course: Get a HANDLE on the Autism Spectrum

Overview
This 12-hour introductory course teaches the foundations of HANDLE through the lens of the Autism Spectrum Disorder. Judith Bluestone proposed that autism is an extreme anxiety disorder. As such, from a neurodevelopmental systems point of view it is not surprising that research is supporting what parents have been also been saying: that people on the spectrum experience gastrointestinal, immunological, endocrinological, psychological and neurological complications. It is a systems disorder that requires a systems approach to treatment (an approach based on understanding of the connections and interactions between components of the neurological system).
In this course students learn to:
- View neurodevelopment from a model of interactive and interdependent functioning
- Broaden perspectives on how specific sensory irregularities affect the autistic experience
- Understand how anxiety produced by irregular sensory integration affects all human beings and all social systems
- View all behavior as communication that should not be masked or arbitrarily controlled until we know what the behaviors are telling us
- Develop an understanding of the common roots of seemingly contradictory behaviors
- Become familiar with some activities that can ameliorate root causes of Autism Spectrum Disorders
- Be able to recognize subtle signs of stress, in order to individualize task challenges
